The Philippines got its first Olympic gold from the time it started participating in the games back in 1924 with the Filipino weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz earning the nation’s first-ever gold medal, ending the Philippines’ 97-year gold-less streak.
The feat not only garnered praise from the Philippines president but also 33 million pesos (roughly $660,000), a house, and more from the government, according to Bloomberg.
Diaz dominated the women’s weightlifting 121 pounds at the Tokyo Olympics on Monday. She finished by lifting an Olympic record of 280 pounds.
After the Olympics, Diaz will be enjoying a new house and a luxury condo gifted by a local billionaire. The house and lot is in Tagaytay courtesy of Philippine Olympic president Abraham Tolentino, and the $280,000 condo is in Eastwood City courtesy of Chinese Filipino billionaire Andrew Lim Tan, according to a press release.
